Presentation to All Party Parliamentary Group on UK in Europe

George Peretz QC, Gerry Facenna QC and Anneli Howard of our group, as well as a representative from the Law Society of Scotland, presented to the All Party Parliamentary Group on UK in Europe on the issues concerning the Great Repeal Bill, the role of parliamentary scrutiny in the Brexit process, revocability of the Article 50 notification and the impact of Brexit on devolved powers.

The Future UK/EU relationship

In this session two panels of leading experts discussed the implications of Brexit on UK’s future customs relationship with the EU (with Valentina Sloane and Jeremy White presenting) and the legal implications of a transitional or implementation arrangement following Brexit (with Michael Hutchings, Dr Lisa Lovdahl Gormsen, Rhodri Thomposon QC and Anneli Howard presenting).

The Future of International Trade

This session opened with a keynote speech on “Leaving the EU but remaining part of Europe?” by Jonathan Faull, until recently Director General, European Commission, the most senior British EU civil servant and Head of the Task Force for negotiations with the UK

A panel of leading experts then explored the implications of Brexit for the UK’s future trading relationships with the rest of the world, covering the following topics:

  • Global Britain: trade agreements with the rest of the world
  • The “WTO option”
  • EU/UK free trade agreement – the roadmap for a negotiation

Presentation to All Party Parliamentary Group on UK in Europe

George Peretz QC, Rhodri Thompson QC, Professor Panos Koutrakos, Michael Hutchings, Stephen Kon, Keiron Beil QC, Anneli Howard and John Davies of our group presented to the All Party Parliamentary Group on UK in Europe on the issues concerning the implications of the High Court ruling in Miller, the Great Repeal Bill and transitionary measures that will likely be required following the Brexit negotiations.

This session explored the following topics across three panels, followed by a Q&A session:

Panel 1:      Can political demands for UK restrictions on immigration from the EU be reconciled with demands for access to the Single Market? (Chair and speakers comprised Martin Coleman, Professor Takis Tridimas, Peter Oliver)

Panel 2:     Future UK trade relationships with the world and how such arrangements would compare with the Single Market (Chair and speakers comprised Professor Panos Koutrakos, Prof. Sir Alan Dashwood QC, Hendrik Bourgeois)
